If you are hoping to run for Wooden Spoon in 2011 please enter the public ballot as well as registering your interest in one of our gold bond places. The ballot will open on Monday, 26 April and entering both will ensure you have the best possible chance of securing your position on the start line - Good Luck

Watched by millions of people across the world and cheered on by half a million supporters who line the streets, Spoon runners who take up the 26.2 mile challenge, are supported every step of the way by the challenge team.

From humble beginnings with less than 8,000 runners in 1981, now more than 125,000 apply to take part in the London Marathon.The event is the single biggest annual fundraiser nation-wide, with countless runners, joggers, mascots, fun runners in fancy dressand walkersall taking part.

Running for Wooden Spoon

There are two ways to run for Wooden Spoon in the London Marathon.

Competition for places is always high, so we recommend you apply early to have the best chance of taking part.

First apply to the London Marathon organisers through the public ballotat www.virginlondonmarathon.com Everyone who applies should know whether they have been successful by early October.

Secondly, register for the Spoon challenges ballot. We will keep your name on file and then check with you to see if you have received a place when the London Marathon public ballot runners are announced.

If you have not been successful, we will enter you into the Spoon ballot for one of our guaranteed Golden Bond places. If you are successful, we ask you to reserve your place with a £100 deposit and then to pledge to raise a minimum of £1900 in sponsorship.

Spoon Challenge support

The Spoon challenge team supports all runners with training and nutritional information, by providing expert fundraising support and kitting you out with a Wooden Spoon running shirt in which to complete the event.

But if that’s not enough to keep you going until the finish line, the thought of a Wooden Spoon goody bag waiting at the finish line may just spur you on. Filled with a clean shirt, a rehydrating drink, a cooling face spray and many other little delights that will help you feel a bit fresher after your run!
